This project centred around a decarbonisation study for the existing campus buildings which supported a successful Phase 2 PSDS application. After being awarded the funding, we completed full design duties on the new system for the college, replacing their coal-fired boilers. The design received the Peoples Award at the European Heat Pump Awards 2022.

The designed heating system was cascade system and consisted of a water source heat pump combined with an air source heat pump – an M&E Engineer’s playground! The tailor-made heating system design is projected to save 790,000 kWh in annual energy consumption and means a hefty 160 Tons of CO2 saved from the atmosphere each year.

There were some significant challenges when it came to the new design: a large range of flow temperatures were required to meet the localised demands across educational, residential and horticultural buildings. We overcame these challenges through careful and considered design of building fabric, equipment and controls.
